What Else Can I Do?

As a band or orchestra parent, you want your child to succeed and you want the school band or orchestra program to flourish. In general terms, how can you help ensure this success? Here are a few suggestions:

• Stay involved with your child’s school music program. You’ll find your child will be proud
  of your interest.
• Help support efforts to maintain and expand music-learning opportunities for all students.
• Learn about the National Standards for music education, and work to see that your child’s school offers instruction geared to the Standards.
• Stay in touch with your child’s band or orchestra director. Ask how you can support the music education program.
• Advise school board members, superintendents and principals of your interest in a quality music education program. Monitor the budget process for any changes that would hurt the music program.
• Form a local advocacy group to support and promote your school music program with board members, civic leaders and legislators in your community.
