Choosing a music store

Many schools have ongoing arrangements with a local music store to rent instruments and provide music for the school band and orchestra. However, you’re under no obligation to use the recommended store. If you choose your own store, ask yourself the following questions:

• Are the salespeople knowledgeable about my child’s instrument and about music in general?
• Are store personnel familiar with my child’s school music program?
• Does the store carry the brands of instruments recommended by my child’s music teacher and band or orchestra director?
• Does the store have an on-site repair department?
• Does it offer loaners while instruments are being repaired?
• Are its rental instruments quality brands and in good condition?
• Does the store offer insurance for rental instruments?
• Does it offer financing for purchases?
• Can rental fees be applied toward purchase?
• Do store personnel seem interested in getting and keeping my business?
• Does the store have a teaching studio?
• Does the store have a sales rep who visits my child’s school on a regular basis?
